Community helps us grow
And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. – Hebrews 10:24-25

One of the most exciting, and sometimes frustrating, elements of the spiritual journey is that it is a journey. In other words, we always have room to grow and learn in a variety of areas.

By being part of a local community, we can help each other grow in character, wisdom, understanding, and favor with God and others. Community gives us a perspective that we may not be able to discover on our own and the opportunity to practice what we’re learning.

Community keeps us consistent!
They all joined together constantly in prayer, along with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers. – Acts 1:14

Let’s face it, life happens. A new job, struggling relationship or exciting hobby can distract us from our daily relationship with Christ. By having a community that we are committed to meeting with once or several times a week, we have an anchor that keeps us grounded during distracting times.

Having other people hold you accountable can keep you balanced when life gets busy or out of control.

Community supports us in times of need!
Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. – Romans 12:16

When hard times fall on someone a church community can help support struggling individuals. Sometimes through sometimes through personal networks and always through encouragement and prayer. Churches offer all kinds of support that can be hard to come by on one’s own.

Community helps us learn to love!
Finally, all of you, be like-minded, be sympathetic, love one another, be compassionate and humble.
– 1 Peter 3:8

It’s effortless to love people who are pleasant and easy to get along with. God asks us to love the annoying, the critical, the egotistical, and the insecure. Churches create a safe place to practice loving those who are difficult to love because the people at church are all striving toward the same goal.

As we learn to focus on the Gospel message, a church community can grow past political, theological, and personality differences. While learning to love is never easy, it is what we are ultimately called to do.

Small Groups (aka Sunday School)

Small Groups isn’t just an hour on Sunday morning. It’s about equipping individuals to make godly choices. It’s about helping them live lives that make a difference in the world around them. Small groups foster close relationships and integral community. The small group atmosphere is ready-made for building friendships. People talk more in small groups of people. People are quick to recognize needs, and help to meet them. The relationships formed within small groups form a strong fabric within a church. Relationships that are formed outside of the (sometimes artificial) setting of a church service, are relationships that will endure and strengthen over time.
